SUSTAINABILITY

We believe we have a moral obligation to help sustain the natural beauty in which our flowers are grown, leading us to use environmentally sound methods.

Floraprima is a leading name in corporate social responsibility and sustainable farming practices in Ecuador. We are continuously learning, developing and improving our knowledge and systems. We strive to provide safe and decent work opportunities and to manage our land sustainably and innovatively.

Approximately 50 hectares of trees are protected and maintained through Floraprima’s reforestation efforts at the farm. The trees provide food and shelter to countless insects, birds and small mammals and also serve as borders, shade and protective wind barriers for the farm.

We have partnered with independent organizations that provide guidelines on important aspects of the industry that guarantee we are working in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. This is the case of SMETA, The Rainforest Alliance, FlorEcuador and BASC. We are proud to comply with all the exhaustive requirements to be called a Rainforest Alliance certified farm since 2013. That same year we obtained the FlorEcuador certification, and in 2019 we successfully achieved the Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA).

Floraprima is a company that believes in its people and in the importance of education as a tool for growth and development. We have developed and implemented activities and programs that encourage education, not only for our employees, but also for their children. One program rewards children with the highest grades with a special diploma, a new backpack with school supplies and a cash prize that is awarded at a prominent ceremony at the farm. Another program brings children whose parents may be working to their community center after school and provides a warm, nutritious meal before they start working on their homework. Throughout the years, we have set up literacy programs at the farm, we have supported initiatives such as the construction of a Municipal School, a Day-care center, computing centers, and even donated computers to employees whose families could not afford them otherwise.

Floraprima provides free on-site medical services at its own health center for employees and their families. The medical personnel support workers’ well-being in different scenarios including child-births, emergencies, and surgeries at the local hospital. Floraprima was among the first companies in Ecuador to provide free COVID-19 vaccines to its employees and family members in a completely free, safe, and timely manner. To date, 1600+ employees and their family members have received already their 3rd booster shots (4 separate COVID-19 vaccination doses.)

We strive to contribute to achieve gender equality. Our company policies have strict hiring and compensation guidelines that assess skills and experience without any gender discrimination. We aim to have a gender-balanced workforce, which is made up of 43% women, 57% men. We are extremely proud that in a male-centric profession of agronomists, Floraprima has an impressive 67% women agronomists. And our Executive Team is split right down the middle: 50% women, and 50% men.
